VectorFusion™ Reinforcements Utilized with CCP Composites’ OptiPLUS® Resin for Infused Tooling Applications
VectorFusion™ reinforcements such as E-BXM 1715-6VC and E-TLYA 3612 provide a great combination of stiffness/strength, drapeability, and low profile (for good cosmetics). Reinforcements such as E-3LTi 10800 provide rapid thickness build up for monolithic laminates, while others such as E-LTi 3600 can be employed with sandwich (cored) laminates for reduced exotherm. Recommended OptiPLUS resins are: 040-8079 (fast gel time) or 040-8091 (slow gel time). Please refer to the CCP website www.ccpcompositesus.com for additional reinforcement laminate schedules, as well as options for tooling gel coats, barrier coats and peroxide choices. Infused OptiPLUS and VectorFusion™ molds can be used in the traditional FRP marketplace or in higher temperature thermoforming and pre-preg processing markets. | 5/2/2012 | Maine firm continues push into BRIDGE and PIER construction with two "firsts"
Harbor Technologies LLC (Brunswick, Maine) reported on Feb. 8 that it has manufactured the world’s longest composite vehicular-bridge support beam. Harbor Technologies constructed the beam for the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Safe and Sound bridge replacement project. Safe and Sound, which started in 2009, aims to repair and replace 802 bridges in five years. To date, 672 bridge projects have been completed. This particular beam design was created for one of three Harbor Technology bridge jobs, a single-span bridge replacement over Sons Creek on highway 97 in Dade County, Mo. Supporting the bridge deck are 105.6-ft long by 6-ft wide by 5-ft deep (32m by 1.8m by 1.5m) Hybrid Composite Beams (HCBs) that are, reportedly, the world’s longest beams currently in use on a vehicular bridge. Harbor Technologies has been manufacturing HCBs, invented by John Hillman, since the first prototype beam was tested early in 2009. During the past decade, HCBs in a variety of sizes have been installed in Texas, New Jersey, Maine and Illinois. The company also was in the news for recent work done on a project for Maine’s Down East Institute (DEI, Beals Island, Maine), home to Maine’s first public shellfish hatchery and a resource for education and research. Harbor Technologies built the components for a new, environmentally sound, all-composite pier structure that can handle a 30,000-lb (13,640-kg) heavy-truck load. The 100-ft/31m long, 30-ft/9.2m wide structure comprises piles, pile caps, decks and floats. Using the HCB beams, the pier only required three “bents,” or transverse support frames, on nine pilings to achieve the necessary load rating. The reduced weight of the composite components allowed the onsite contractor to use smaller, less costly leased equipment during the installation, which was accomplished in half the time required when traditional materials are used. The new structure is expected to last at least 100 years with minimal maintenance, despite exposure to the harsh marine environment. DEI’s documentation of the installation process can be viewed at downeastinstitute.org/current-pier-project.htm.

Recycled Carbon Fiber Products Materials Innovation Technologies (MIT, Lake City, S.C.) introduced MIT-RCF, a wet-laid, nonwoven blanket of randomly oriented, intermediate-grade carbon fibers, with areal basis weights of 50 g/m2 to 500 g/m2, which is made from unused prepreg scrap reclaimed from 787 Dreamliner production and currently resold in roll-goods form. MIT is working on providing this materials in several varieties, including one that commingles thermoplastic/carbon fibers, stitch-bonded forms from Vectorply Corporation (Phenix City, AL) and a prepreg. The carbon fiber prepreg in original form sells for about $35/lb. MIT's roll-goods product goes for $20/lb. When it is molded with epoxy, it offers a tensile strength of 369 MPa, tensile modulus of 37.6 GPa, flex strength of 556 MPa and flex modulus of 36.4 GPa.

| 09/17/2009 | VectorWind from Vectorply Corporation: Specialized Reinforcements for the Wind Energy Industry |
Due to the recent focus on renewable energy sources, such as wind power, composite manufacturers have been expanding their product ranges and capabilities. With this shift toward more highly engineered composite structures comes a need for specific reinforcements necessary to meet the stringent design requirements. VectorWind multiaxial reinforcements are now available from Vectorply which have been designed specifically for these applications.
The VectorWind product line reflects the most commonly used glass fiber reinforcements used in wind blade and nacelle manufacturing. Heavy weight unidirectionals and 0/90 degree biaxials in the 740gsm to 1840gsm (22oz/yd2 to 55oz/yd2) range are available for spar cap and root section applications, while double bias and warp/weft triaxials in the range of 425gsm to 1650gsm (12oz/yd2 to 48oz/yd2) are available for airfoil sections and shear webs. While wind energy is a relatively new technology, there are many installations that have been operational for several years and may need repairs and/or retrofitting. VectorWind reinforcements are also ideal for blade and nacelle repair; whether for newly produced structures damaged during transportation or older installations in need of an upgrade.
Every VectorWind product can be used in more advanced processing techniques such as vacuum infusion and prepreg/oven cure in polyester, vinylester, or epoxy resion systems. For a complete listing of Vectorply standard products, please reference the standard product booklet or vist our website at www.vectorply.com

| 02/18/2009 | VectorUltra™: A Wide Variety of Advanced Reinforcement Solutions that are “Always in Stock” |
VectorUltra™ from Vectorply Corporation: A Wide Variety of Advanced Reinforcement Solutions that are "Always in Stock" For performance driven composite applications, advanced reinforcing fibers such as carbon and aramid are a necessity. A wide range of these advanced fiber products are needed to fully optimize key physical and mechanical properties such as weight, thickness, stiffness and strength. Fortunately, Vectorply Corporation provides a wide range of reinforcements that can meet almost any requirement. Better yet, the standard VectorUltra™ products are always in stock and ready to ship. From unidirectionals to quadraxials, Vectorply Corporation supplies a wide variety of high strength, standard modulus carbon reinforcements.
These product range in weight from 4.5oz/yd² (150g/m²) up to 24oz/yd² (800g/m²). In fact, the C-BX 0450 product is the lightest double bias carbon fabric available on the market today. The lightweight double bias reinforcements are more drapeable and provide more reinforcing options than many standard 0°/90° wovens. Heavier weight carbon multiaxial reinforcements are also available.
These products can be used to replace multiple lightweight wovens. The C-QX 1800 and C-QX 2300 quadraxials can replace several layers of continuously rotated unidirectionals, which will save considerable lay-up time and fabric waste. Vectorply Corporation also provides hybrid aramid and E-glass double bias fabrics for lightweight impact resistant applications. The standard hybrids are provided for better processing (easier to cut) and lower cost than standard all-aramid reinforcements. | 11/19/2008 | Engineered Reinforcements for Composite Tank and Pipe Fabricators |
Vectorply Corporation's Engineered Reinforcements for Composite Tank and Pipe Fabricators Composite tanks, pipes, scrubbers, and other structures are key components in safely handling, storing and the transportation of highly corrosive fluids and other hazardous products. Fabricating such large, and often complex structures, can be difficult with standard methods such as filament winding and spray-up fiberglass chop.
Vectorply Corporation's VectorMat™ (binder-free stitched chopped mat) and weft (90°) unidirectional materials are ideal materials for increasing production efficiencies. Both the VectorMat™ and weft unidirectional reinforcements are sufficiently robust to be pulled through resin baths and easily wound on traditional tank and pipe mandrels. The wide range of VectorMat™ reinforcements (available in areal weights from 1.0 oz/ft² to 4.0 oz/ft²) allow for rapid thickness build up, which aid in decreasing processing time and labor.
VectorMat™ is "binder free" allowing for a quick wet out and high conformability. Vectorply's weft unidirectional reinforcements are used to increase longitudinal stiffness of pipes and are commonly used to join tank sections together. Standard available areal weights are 9.22oz/yd² and 15.5oz/yd², and are available in various roll widths up to 100?. | 09/11/2008 | "Clear the air" with VectorFusion |
"Clear the Air" with Vectorply Corporation's VectorFusion™ Vacuum Infusion Grade Materials Due to government regulations and competition among fabricators, switching from traditional open mold processing to vacuum infusion has become increasingly prevalent. In addition, vacuum infusion can also create numerous advantages within the workplace and with the use of VectorFusion™ reinforcements these advantages can be optimized. Vacuum infusion processing, or VIP, is ideal for reducing or eliminating potentially harmful VOC emissions, which creates safer working conditions and reduces the impact on the environment. Not only is VIP a "green" process, but the part-to-part consistency and overall laminate quality is greatly enhanced. Some forms of VIP, while eliminating VOCs, produce more solid waste in the form of surface flow medias and peel plies.
Using VectorFusion™ reinforcements eliminates the need for these sacrificial materials, lessening the environmental impact even more. VectorFusion™ reinforcements only selectively use continuous filament mats (CFM), which can use excessive amounts of resin. A combination of less CFM and resin means higher mechanical properties and less loss of laminate thickness. "Clear the Air" by using VectorFusion™ reinforcements in your next VIP project. | 06/20/2008 | Expanding Product Line - VectorUltra and VectorFusion |
Vectorply Corporation Expands VectorFusion™ and VectorUltra™ Product Lines to Meet High Performance Requirements Vectorply Corporation, being dedicated to improving the performance and reliability of their customers' composite structures, has expanded their standard vacuum infusion and advanced fiber product lines. VectorFusion™ vacuum infusion-grade materials, which merges high resin permeability with structural reinforcements, now includes a greater variety of multiaxial & 0°/90° channeled biaxial products. VectorUltra™ advanced reinforcement materials now include infusion grade products that utilize Micromesh™ for better resin impregnation while maintaining high fiber volume fractions.
The VectorFusion™ line now includes a wider range of E-glass fiber reinforcements from 18 oz/yd² (600 gsm) up to 108 oz/yd² (3700 gsm). The E-LTi 1800 channeled 0°/90° biaxial was added for use in infused lightweight sandwich laminates where thin skins are a requirement. The E-3LTi 5400 channeled fabric was also added to provide a suitable mid-range reinforcement between the E-LTi 3600 and E-2LTi 7200 products. Warp (or 0°) dominant biaxial reinforcements E-LTi 2500 and E-2LTi 5000 are excellent replacements for standard unidirectional fabrics in infused laminates for such applications as stiffener caps or localized reinforcement. For infusible E-glass fiber multiaxials, two versions of the 0°/+60°/-60° triaxial, E-TLYA 2712 and E-TLYA 3612 (+/-60°) , are now available as standard products along with the E-QXCFM 3510 quadraxial. The two triaxial reinforcements conform very well to complex mold shapes, requiring little to no darting or cutting and both utilize a lightweight 1.2 oz/yd² (41 gsm) A-glass veil for increased resin flow characteristics. For thicker sections requiring isotropic properties, the quadraxial E-QXCFM 3510 employs a 1.0 oz/ft² continuous filament mat (305 gsm continuous filament mat). As with all VectorFusion™ reinforcements, each of the above listed products act as its own flow media, and does not require sacrificial medias or cloths in order to be properly infused.
The advanced fiber VectorUltra™ line has added two infusion-grade carbon fiber reinforcements to its already wide range of standard products. The C-BXi 1205 double bias (±45°) and C-LTi 1105 biaxial (0°/90°) reinforcements use a very lightweight 0.5 oz/yd² (17 gsm) Micromesh™ non-woven veil in between the plies for increased flow rates and more importantly better fiber impregnation. The Micromesh™ also increases interlaminar shear strength and toughness, which has always been an issue with carbon fiber based composites. | 07/05/2006 | Exciting Carbon Product Announcement! |
Vectorply is pleased to announce a new product to our advanced line of VectorUltra specialty fabrics. We are introducing a 6 oz/yd^2 +/-45 degree carbon fabric available in 50" width or any slit widths divisible by 50" (must utilize full width). This product is intended to compete with lightweight woven fabrics that are currently in tight supply. The differences are: C-BX 0600 is a tight construction (not gappy) knitted fabric stitched 5 gauge... not woven. C-BX 0600 is not the same cosmetically as a woven but will work well for inner plies as an alternative where cosmetics are not the reason for use. Sample swatches are available today. Give us a call -- we will be happy to answer any questions!
